Orlando Pirates have generated over R100 million from selling two of their top players this season.
Mohau Nkota and Mbekezeli Mbokazi both played for the DSTV Diski Challenge side in 2013 and 2014 before being promoted to the senior team.
They made a significant impression on their debuts and quickly established themselves in the Pirates’ starting eleven. In no time, both youngsters were sold to clubs in Saudi Arabia and the USA.
Despite their departures, the Buccaneers remain a dominant force and are likely to promote new players from within. They have also only spent a portion of the revenue generated to acquire quality players in January or for the upcoming season.
Additionally, the Sea Robbers have already earned R17 million from winning two cup competitions and qualifying for the CAF Champions League.
Orlando Pirates could potentially earn even more than R100 million
Mohau Nkota was reportedly sold for R52 million to Al-Ettifaq, while Mbekezeli Mbokazi was sold for R51 million to MLS side Chicago Fire. With R100 million accrued from these transfers, the Buccaneers have the financial capability to acquire one or two players to replace the duo if they choose to do so.
So far, Kamohelo Sebelebele and Tshepang Moremi have stepped in to fill Nkota’s position. However, replacing Mbokazi, who was the PSL’s best defender at just 20 years old, will be a challenge.
With the Betway Premiership and Nedbank Cup still up for grabs, Orlando Pirates have the opportunity to increase the R100 million they garnered from Nkota and Mbokazi.
Relebohile Mofokeng, who has been linked with a move overseas, could potentially leave the club at the end of the season for nothing less than R50 million. If Mofokeng leaves, he will be their third development player to leave in a space of months.
