Maybe Mukoko did Orlando Pirates and South Africa a favour

Posted on December 5, 2025

St. Eloi Lupopo defender Dieumerci Mukoko has become a hot topic on South African social media following his antics against Orlando Pirates in the CAF Champions League.

In the dramatic second leg at Orlando Stadium, Mukoko was involved in an altercation that resulted in two players from each team being sent off.

The 27-year-old defender then insulted and provoked fans after narrowly avoiding a red card. Despite trailing 3-0 at one point, Lupopo eventually won the match on penalties.

Mukoko continues to ‘haunt’ Pirates supporters

Following the CAF CL second leg, Mukoko gained significant attention in South Africa for his aggressive and theatrical style of play.

He “tormented” Pirates with a series of provocative and unsporting behaviours, drawing criticism from football fans. His antics quickly went viral on social media, turning him into a meme-worthy villain among Bucs supporters, who labelled him a “bully,” “sore loser,” and “theatrical menace.”

On the other side of Soweto, Kaizer Chiefs fans largely embraced Mukoko as a folk hero due to his chaotic actions. This affection stems from the rivalry dynamic: Mukoko’s role in eliminating Pirates felt like a vicarious victory for Amakhosi, who were also making progress in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Why ‘Mukoko fans’ won’t have the last laugh over Pirates

After bowing out of the CAF Champions League in the second preliminary stage, the Buccaneers could focus solely on the Betway Premiership.

Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has a squad capable of competing in both the league and CAF, but since the club has not tasted league success in 13 years, it makes sense to prioritise the league.

With fewer matches compared to their rivals, Pirates have the luxury of resting key players or introducing them in the second half. Players like Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Relebohile Mofokeng, and Oswin Appollis have frequently come off the bench to make an impact.

Moreover, with Pirates players making up nearly 40% of the Bafana Bafana national team, perhaps Mukoko’s antics did not harm the Buccaneers or the country as a whole.

Pirates have not faced any serious injuries this season, and with Ouaddou rotating the squad effectively, this will please national coach Hugo Broos.

Will Pirates win the league?
