Khalil Explains Mayo’s Unfamiliar Role

Posted on December 5, 2025

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef has explained why Khanyisa Mayo appeared more on the right wing than central when he came on against Chippa United.

Mayo and Mduduzi Shabalala were introduced in the 61st minute as Chiefs coaches tried to find a way to break through Chippa’s resilient defence.

Ben Youssef was asked Mayo appeared more on the right wing than playing central, explaining the players have the freedom to switch positions, with Mayo offering them a lot from the wing

“The plan of the game when we made the substitution was for Khanyisa Mayo to be the second striker,” he said.

“It was Silva and him as second striker, Vilakazi on the left side and Shabalala on the right side.

“Then we give them the freedom. Sometimes it’s situation in the game, you can change. Because when he started as a playmaker he didn’t receive a lot of balls.

“Then he went to the right, a permutation between him and Shabalala, he wanted to be right side and he gave us a lot of solutions on the right side with crosses.

“When he was on the right side, the combination with him and Shabalala create an opportunity also for scoring. It was for Shabalala and the chip cut-back, when he crossed for Ighodaro, he was unlucky [not] to score.

“The position of Mayo on the right side, and playmaker gave us a lot of solutions.”

Chiefs have one more chance to reclimb into third spot on the log when they will face TS Galaxy on Sunday. Amakhosi are currently fifth with 23 points, but could climb to 26 – level with Mamelodi Sundowns.
