Bafana and Sundowns player’s name surfaces during ‘Cat’ Matlala’s hearing

Posted on December 1, 2025

The name of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana defender Grant Kekana surfaced during Thursday’s sitting of the Ad Hoc Committee, where alleged cartel leader Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala appeared.

Kekana (33) was previously romantically linked to Claudette Masethe, who is the sister of Matlala.

During the proceedings, Crossby Vusi Shongwe of the uMkhonto we Sizwe [MK Party] questioned Matlala about the connection and whether he had personally met former deputy minister of communications Pinky Kekana, who is the mother of the Sundowns defender.

Bafana and Downs star Grant Kekana mentioned by Matlala

“Do you have a sister who is married to somebody who’s related to Minister Pinky?” Shongwe asked Matlala.

Matlala corrected him, confirming the relationship, but denied that they were married. “Oh ja, the one who was a director… They were just dating; they were not married,” he replied, referring to Kekana and his sister.

“[My sister was dating] the boy who plays football for Mamelodi Sundowns… Grant Kekana.”

Shongwe asked Matlala if he had met Kekana’s mother through the Bafana star, but he said he had never met the former deputy minister.

Grant Kekana has made only nine appearances for Mamelodi Sundowns this season. The experienced defender was one of the key players for the club and country two years ago but injuries have limited him to just four league appearances this season.

His lack of gametime has affected his place in the national team and was not named in the Bafana Bafana preliminary AFCON squad.

What’s your take on “Cat” Matlala’s testimony?
