Jose Riveiro gives his thoughts on Kaizer Chiefs this season

Posted on November 21, 2025

Former Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has given his take on Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune United’s performance this season.

Amakhosi are currently third in the Betway Premiership, just three points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. Behind them is Sekhukhune United, who have been the surprise package this season, having topped the league for two months.

“Chiefs are doing better than last season, and I think we were all a little bit surprised as well with the performance of Sekhukhune in the first months of the competition,”  Riveiro said as per FARPost.

“I think it will come to the second part of the season, after Christmas, that it is going to be exciting, so I am looking forward to that,” he said.

Riveiro is currently in South Africa for the Carling Knockout Cup Campaign Media Update, opened up about his move to Al Ahly in May.

Riveiro impressed with Kaizer Chiefs

After three successful seasons with the Buccaneers, the 50-year-old tactician dropped a bombshell in April when he announced he would not renew his contract with Pirates. A month later, he left to join several league matches with Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

“The only thing I didn’t like about my move to Al Ahly is that,” he said this week.

“I had to leave before completing the seven remaining games with Orlando Pirates. It was a must, from Al Ahly’s point of view, so that I could prepare for the FIFA Club World, which didn’t happen at the end… That is what I didn’t like.”

Despite talks linking him with a possible move to Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, Riveiro maintains that he would not coach another PSL team besides Pirates.
