Riveiro – Why I’m Back In SA

Posted on November 19, 2025

Former Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro is back in South Africa, sending speculation about a potential return to coach in Mzansi into overdrive.

Riveiro famously left the Buccaneers before the end of last season after agreeing to join Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

However, his stint with the record CAF Champions League winners was short-lived and he left at the end of August already.

The Spaniard who lifted five trophies with Pirates in just three seasons is now back on South African shores due to a special invite by Carling Black Label ahead of the Carling Knockout Cup final.

“I’ve been part of the Black Label journey for three years already, two special ones in the last two years,” he told SuperSport TV host Thomas Mlambo.

“And now I have the opportunity to be part of the brand for a couple of weeks to make sure that we have an exciting tournament in the end.

“That’s why.”

It is yet to be confirmed what exactly Riveiro’s role will be as part of the Carling Cup campaign, but more answers are expected during a media event on Wednesday.

Riveiro coached Pirates in 131 games, winning 82 – making him one of the most successful coaches in Pirates history.

The Spaniard’s former side are in the Carling Knockout Cup final against Marumo Gallants, which will be played on 6 December, with the winner set to take on the Carling All Stars – consisting of PSL players and DStv Diski Challenge starlets voted into the XI by fans.

For the last two years, Riveiro was voted to coach the Carling All Stars, winning the once-off match on both occasions after beating Stellenbosch FC 2-1 and Magesi 3-0.
