‘Chiefs tried’ – Agent explains how Pirates beat Amakhosi to Appollis

Posted on November 12, 2025

Former Bafana Bafana midfielder and current player agent Lance Davids has shed light on why Oswin Appollis’ much-anticipated move to Kaizer Chiefs never materialised.

The talented 24-year-old winger had been heavily linked with a transfer to Naturena for over a year, but the deal ultimately fell through.

During the last transfer window, it was widely believed that Chiefs were closing in on Appollis, only for him to make a surprise switch to their rivals, Orlando Pirates.

Chiefs wanted Appollis but failed

At the time Chiefs were interested in Appollis, the attacker was still at Polokwane City. Davids said Amakhosi tried to sign the winger but failed.

“Chiefs tried, but again, we are not involved in those things. Club-to-club negotiations don’t concern us as agents,” Davids explained on Behind the Boot podcast.

“If I speak to you and you’re Club A, and I’m Club B, and you don’t want to sell to me, there’s nothing I can do as an agent.”

Davids also revealed that Mamelodi Sundowns and Esperance were among several other clubs interested in securing the winger’s services.

“There are many deals around the world that get hijacked. Well done to Orlando Pirates,” the former Bafana star added.

Davids said his agent made the best decision to join Pirates given his success at the club after just four months.

In hindsight, Chiefs’ failure to sign Appollis has proven to be a major boost for their Soweto rivals. Since joining the Buccaneers, the dynamic winger has been in sensational form, scoring three goals and providing five assists so far this season.

Many now regard Appollis as one of the best players in the PSL at the moment.

Is Appollis the best player in the league?
