Chiefs Coach Makes Example After Impressive Velebayi Debut

Posted on November 6, 2025

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze says the impressive debut of Asanele Velebayi shows patience is required to integrate their new talent.

Velebayi, 22, and 19-year-old Luke Baartman joined Chiefs as free agents after their relegation with Cape Town Spurs from the second-tier, as they snatched two of the most promising attacking talents in the country.

However, Velebayi made his first start in the league in match-day 11, while Baartman has yet to be included in the squad, with both suffering without a full pre-season as Spurs contested their moves to Amakhosi.

“It’s true that he made his debut and I want to take advantage of your question to emphasise that there’s a process into bringing new players into a team, and sometimes they take more time [to get into the XI],” Kaze said.

“When you watch you could kill the confidence of a player [putting him in too early], I will say that it’s true that he brings something different, because he is a player that is willing to go 1v1.

“He is player that when you create those situations and you give the ball to him in 1v1 situations – he likes to go forward and take players on, he can cross, he can get inside and shoot. It was a good debut and we’re sure he can do even more.”
