Zwane On Mokwena Reunion, Hopeful For Fans Reception

Posted on November 4, 2025

Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane has opened up on being drawn with the MC Alger in the CAF Champions League, led by their former head coach Rulani Mokwena.

Sundowns were pitted as top seeds in Group C alongside the Algerian champions, Al Hilal and St Eloi Lupopo in the draw that took place on Monday afternoon at the SuperSport studios in Johannesburg.

In a script from the football gods, as was described by many who was in attendance of the draw – Mokwena will return to Tshwane for the first time as a coach, since his acrimonious sacking at Masandawana over two seasons ago.

“That’s the Champions League for you, you can’t choose who you want to play – but for our group? It’s an exciting group,” Zwane said after their draw at SuperSport Studios.

“But I know we have a good team, with good quality players, we just have to bring our A-game for all the games we play and try to put the team where it can qualify for the next round.”

Zwane says Mokwena will receive a warm welcome from the squad, and is hopeful the supporters of the Yellow Nation will too.

“I think there won’t be too much drama, there’s so much respect for him, he has done a lot for the club and we like him, he’s a good human being, he’s a good coach, we learnt so much from him as players,” Zwane said.

“So I think we will welcome him with a good hand, 100% I am hoping that [the supporters welcome him too].”
