Sundowns coach tells honest truth about Bafana star

Posted on October 29, 2025

They say every football transfer is always a risk. When Mamelodi Sundowns snatched Fawaaz Basadien from Stellenbosch FC, many saw it as the natural next step for one of South Africa’s most promising full-backs.

The newly established Bafana Bafana international also attracted serious interest from Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

WHY FAWAAZ BASADIEN IS STRUGGLING AT MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

After three months in Tshwane, the Grassy Park-born defender has only made six appearances from the 16 games Kabo Yellow have played this season, mainly as a substitute.

Sundowns coach, Miguel Cardoso, candid as ever, has lifted the lid on why.

“We brought in four new players and I think this was the smallest transfer window in the past five years for Mamelodi Sundowns,” the Portuguese coach told journalists after the club’s 7-1 aggregate win over Nigerian champions Remo Stars in the CAF Champions League second round.

“With Fawaaz, I want you to understand the word I’m going to use, he’s struggling with his competition.”

Cardoso confirmed that Basadien’s main challenge is Aubrey Modiba, who is in sensational form at left back. The mentor revealed that the former Milano United and Swallows star isn’t the only one struggling to break through.

“Aubrey is at a very good level at the moment,” he explained. “So Fawaaz’s situation is more difficult because of the competition in that position. Asekho Tiwani, Thato Sibiya, and Divine Lunga are also struggling,” the Sundowns tactician added.

ORLANDO PIRATES IN THE BETWAY PREMIERSHIP

In the meantime, Masandawana are busy preparing for some special visitors. The mighty Orlando Pirates are coming to Tshwane. The two sides will battle in the Betway Premiership on Saturday at 15:30 at the Loftus Versveld.

Sundowns currently top the division with 21 points from 10 games, while Pirates lurk in third spot with three points less and, crucially, two games in hand.
