Wounded Pirates eyeing victory over ‘unique’ Polokwane City

Posted on October 22, 2025

“Polokwane City are a unique team. The coach has a very unique style of how he sets up his team,” said Ncikazi.

Fresh from the CAF Champions League drubbing at the hands of Saint-Eloi Lupopo, Orlando Pirates will be looking to bounce back to winning ways when they meet Polokwane City tonight.

The Orlando Stadium will host the Betway Premiership clash this evening (kickoff is at 7.30pm).

Pirates come into this clash low on confidence having lost 3-0 to Lupopo of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the first leg of the second preliminary round last weekend.

The Buccaneers are currently third on the log with 15 points after seven games and they trail log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by six points and have three games in hand.

‘Polokwane City a unique team’

Bucs assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi, however, prefers points over games in hand.

“It’s important to gather as many points as possible. We know that the number of games are not the same but it’s still important for us to play and win matches,” Ncikazi told Pirates media.

“It’s important to have a comeback, and improve our performances. There we are guaranteed, if we improve performances we’ll get the right results.

“Polokwane City are a unique team. The coach has a very unique style of how he sets up his team. And for us, it’s to nullify the strengths of the opponent and improve our performance and adapt quickly for a new situation and a new competition. And win the match. That’s all that matters right now,” added Ncikazi.

Rise and Shine currently occupy sixth position on the log. They have the same number of points as Pirates, fourth-placed Kaizer Chiefs and fifth-placed Durban City, but the teams above them have a better goal difference than them.

A win against Pirates could see them move up to third spot depending on the result of the game between Chiefs and Siwelele FC, which is set to take place at the FNB stadium tonight.
