Former Kaizer Chiefs attacker arrested in massive drug bust
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A former Kaizer Chiefs player has found himself on the wrong side of the law in his native country Zimbabwe.

Brian Abbas Amidu, was arrested in Kwekwe for alleged drug trafficking. According to reports, the 35-year-old footballer who also played for Black Leopards and CAPS United was taken into custody along the Kwekwe-Kadoma Highway earlier this week.

Many local fans will remember Amidu from his stint at the Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs back in 2012.

According to IOL, Zimbabwean authorities intercepted the vehicle Amidu was travelling in and uncovered 75 tightly packed black plastic bags filled with dagga before arresting the former player. Amidu was remanded in custody and is now awaiting a bail hearing.

Amidu joined Kaizer Chiefs in 2012 from Black Mambas FC. His stay at Naturena however lasted just three months. He then joined fellow South African side Black Leopards FC, where he’d spend the next three years at.

Amidu then spent the next half of the decade at various clubs in Africa as well as the Middle East before leaving football in 2020. He also managed to register seven caps for the Zimbabwean national team.

Amidu arrest sparks ‘real age’ question

There’s been some confusion over Amidu’s identity and age. While police documents list him as 29-years-old, Amidu joined Chiefs back in 2012 as a 21-year-old. The simple mathematics says he should be at least 34-years-old at present.

“Kaizer Chiefs have signed Black Mambas striker, Brian Abbas Amidu on a three and half year deal,” an official Amakhosi club statement read back in 2012.

“The 21-year-old has already represented his country at U-23 level. He said speaking to kaizerchiefs.com ‘I am delighted to have signed with Chiefs. I have been training with the team since late last year. I’ve also had the opportunity to attend some of the games. It is without a doubt one of the biggest Clubs in the continent and I am delighted to be part of such a respected sporting brand’.”
