Broos – Why I Called Up Shabalala

Posted on October 6, 2025

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has explained he sees Kaizer Chiefs’ Mduduzi Shabalala as an option in the number 10 role in the national team.

Shabalala, 21, was called up to replace Relebohile Mofokeng who picked up an injury in his side’s 1-0 win over Siwelele FC.

The Amakhosi man has featured in 10 games for his club this season and was with Bafana in the previous camp, although he didn’t make an appearance against Nigeria or Lesotho.

Shabalala could now potentially make his debut in the crucial qualifiers against Zimbabwe on Friday or Rwanda next week Tuesday, as Bafana look to secure their 2026 FIFA World Cup ticket.

Broos believes he is best-suited for the position behind the striker, where Shabalala will likely compete with Sipho Mbule in the Bafana setup.

“I think if you see the games of Chiefs, I think Mduduzi is someone who is in action, he knows where to run when there is a space,” he said when asked what the Chiefs player brings.

“For me his best position is behind the striker, so if we use him it will be in that position.”
