Solomons On Monyane And New Challenges At Chiefs
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Kaizer Chiefs wing-back Dillan Solomons admits it’s been a tough start to his season but wants to continue the momentum the likes of Thabiso Monyane has brought into the right-back role.

Solomons and Reeve Frosler, and at times Zitha Kwinika were considered the right-side options in the back four, while there were cases of wing-back systems.

But in the off-season, the arrival of former Orlando Pirates wing-back Monyane threw a spanner in the works with extra competition for places in the team and hit the ground running – so much – that a recall to the senior national team was possible.

However, an injury to the South Africa international defender has seen Frosler and Solomons now back into the fold over the last couple of games.

“These past few months was really tough for myself but really good for the team and that’s what comes first, the team comes first, obviously I’m really sad Thabiso had to go out for his injury, he was doing really well,” Solomons said.

“And as players, sometimes you have to understand when players are doing well, there’s nothing more you can do than work hard and show support – and at the time he was doing very well… now it’s about going into the games as myself.

“Try to keep that momentum going, sometimes in the last couple of seasons, we can win a few games and then it just dies – so we didn’t want that to happen, we want to be more consistent…”

The former Stellenbosch and Cape Town All Stars winger, who was converted into a defender at the now-defunct Moroka Swallows says he’s looking at ways of elevating his performances.

“I was trying to stay in a good mental state, it’s really important for myself – is keeping myself in a good state and then working on things you feel you can work on, it’s always good to speak to the coaches to find out where I can improve and work on those things,” Solomons.

“And obviously keeping yourself physically good, so that when your opportunity comes, you have to be ready – because in these times you have keep believing that your opportunity will come and you just have to stay there mentally and just be ready for that opportunity.”

Solomons will be aiming to retain his place in the starting line-up when Chiefs host AmaZulu on Wednesday evening at the Calabash at 19h30.
