Former Kaizer Chiefs winger sends apology to family and friends

Posted on September 22, 2025

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Kgaogelo Sekgotha is stepping back into the light.

The former Upington City, Swallows FC and Bidvest Star star has been released from the Hope of Achievers Rehabilitation Centre after beating substance abuse.

The Moletji-born star checked into the Segwashi-based facility four months ago.

Known as “Kigi,” the speedy winger’s troubles began in June 2024 when Stellenbosch FC released him for misconduct after just four months in the Cape Winelands.

Sekgota moved to a lower division club, Upington, before the club’s management encouraged his journey to check into rehab.

At the time, he had played 161 games as a professional, including a stint with a high-profile club such as Kaizer Chiefs and Vitória Setúbal in Portugal.

Following the four-month battle that has derailed his career, Sekgotha says he now feels clean, fit, and ready to rebuild his life.

“I want to sincerely apologise to my supporters, my family and my friends,” Sekgota told Sunday World. “I let you down when I allowed myself to be consumed by substance abuse. It was the darkest chapter of my life, but I am grateful for the second chance I have been given,” Sekgotha added.

He admitted his off-field struggles disappointed those who believed in him. But after intensive therapy and a structured programme, the skilful midfielder is confident he can honour the game again.

“Football has always been my passion, and I want to honour the game and everyone who stood by me during my struggles. I want to inspire others who might be going through the same struggles. If I can rise again, so can they,” he added.

Rehab owner Watson Luandi revealed that the former Amakhosi attacker’s recovery needed four months rather than four. Additionally, five clubs have already made inquiries about his availability. “[It] shows his commitment to change.

“He has been working on regaining match fitness and will soon be back on the field once he makes a decision on his next club,” Luandi revealed.
