Jose Riveiro to Kaizer Chiefs? Really?

Posted on September 20, 2025

The departure of Nasreddine Nabi from Kaizer Chiefs has sparked all kinds of speculation that are too far from reality.

One of the wilder rumours is that Jose Riveiro might be tempted to take over at Naturena.

Amakhosi fans just have to look back at what Riveiro said upon leaving this land in May.

THE JOSE RIVEIRO TO KAIZER CHIEFS DREAM

The Amakhosi hot seat is vacant again after Nasreddine Nabi’s departure this week. Naturally, the club is expected to hire an available high-profile, proven winner.

Riveiro is currently without a club. The Spaniard was sacked by Al Ahly after one win in seven games: three in the FIFA Club World and four in the Egyptian Premier League.

Yes, the Riveiro made a mark in South Africa. Three MTN8 titles, two Nedbank Cups, and three consecutive runner-up finishes in the league from 2022 to 2025, not forgetting the storming run to the CAF Champions League semifinal last term.

With Nabi’s parking bay now available at Kaizer Chiefs’ Naturena base, a section of fans began dreaming. Could Riveiro really come to Amakhosi?

THE FAMOUS WORDS

Well… remember this? Just days before leaving Orlando Pirates in May, Riveiro was asked if he would ever coach another club in South Africa. His answer was crystal clear:

“No, never. Never… Once Always. I will never coach any other team in South Africa. I am a Buccaneer. Orlando Pirates is the only club that I could have the motivation and the courage and energy, and the heart, in this case, to coach in the country. [There is] no doubt.”

So, while some Kaizer Chiefs supporters may be fantasising, the reality is simple: Riveiro isn’t going to swap the Orlando Stadium for FNB.
