Rulani Draws in Algerian League Opener

Posted on September 1, 2025

Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena’s tenure at MC Alger began with a 0-0 draw against against USM Alger this past weekend.

Alger earned one point away from home after a 0-0 stalemate against USM Alger at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker on Sunday evening.

Mokwena’s team has only hit the pitch once, putting them a game behind most of the other clubs in the Algerian Ligue 1, who have already played twice.

The former Wydad Casablanca mentor believes his team could have secured more than a draw if they had converted the chances they created.

“I agree there was a lot of fouls but also a lot of chances for us,” Mokwena said in the press conference after the match.

“We struggled a little bit with the duels and keeping the ball a little bit with the front line in the first half.

“And when that happens, we have a bit of a problem because we can only attack with transitions.”

Offering his verdict on the league, Mokwena described it as aggressive, based on what he saw while studying last season’s matches to prepare his team for this campaign.

“I think the league is aggressive, I studied the league last season,” Mokwena said.

“I watched all our games before this game, I watched five games of USM Alger.”
