Kaizer Chiefs have maintained their unbeaten start to the season with the 0-0 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening.
From the get-go, Chiefs came into the game with a clear game plan, press with a high line and unsettle Sundowns’ build-up and while it worked, with the visitors particularly lacklustre – neither side looked like scoring in the opening half of the game.
It was the typical approach from Chiefs in the high-profile game under returning head coach Nasreddine Nabi – who missed their opening three wins of the league due to a family emergency and returned to Tunisia. Physical, with immense intensity.
However, in the second half, Sundowns managed to calm things down and forge a few chances of their own – but none of which really tested Brandon Petersen, with his only real save coming from a long range strike from Teboho Mokoena.
The atmosphere was electric as over 75,000 were packed inside the Calabash which offered an impression of how the tides are turning for Amakhosi – who ended their decade-long trophy drought with the Nedbank Cup last season.
Early days – with 10 points after their first four games, and avoiding defeat against the reigning champions, who are two points behind, with eight on the board – proves an exciting start for Nabi and his troops, as Amakhosi are level on points with leaders Sekhukhune United, who drew 1-1 with AmaZulu.
