Kaizer Jr Opens Up On Last Three Chiefs’ Signings

Posted on August 20, 2025

Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. says they made a targeted effort to sign the best young talent after securing the signatures of Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman.

Chiefs snatched the duo up as free agents after Cape Town Spurs’ relegation to the ABC Motsepe League, and the Premier Soccer League Dispute Resolution Chamber declaring them free agents.

In addition, Amakhosi also secured the signing of former Mamelodi Sundowns forward Etiosa Ighodaro, with Motaung Jr. expressing his excitement about the latest deals.

“It’s all about the specific players we need for how we want to play,” the SD told SuperSport TV after Amakhosi’s 1-0 win over Richards Bay.

“We’re very excited and we always had a clear strategy about getting the best young talent. We’re just very pleased to welcome them – obviously there are a few administrative issues still to happen.

“But we’re very excited, especially also in bringing Ighodaro upfront. We know the young talent with Baartman and Velebayi, we’re excited to unleash them to the fans, but at the same time they will need some time to understand who we are.

“This process hasn’t been easy. Again, the squad is picking but we’re still very much work in progress.”

Chiefs currently sit in second place on the Betway Premiership log after starting the 2025/26 season with three successive wins – they will now face reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium in their next league game in a week’s time.
