Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye picked influential attacker Mduduzi Shabalala as his Man of the Match in their hard-fought win over Stellenbosch FC despite Aden McCarthy walking away with the accolade.
The 21-year-old started the game and lasted 75 minutes, with Khanye impressed with how attack-minded the player was in the 2-0 victory that saw Amakhosi in third position after the opening round of the season.
Khanye also felt that Shabalala could have had a goal and added that the former South African junior international needs to understand that he is a senior player now and should take more responsibility in matches.
“I compliment Mdu in this game, for me he was Man of the Match, it’s a pity they gave it to [Aden] McCarthy,” said Khanye on iDiski TV.
“But Mdu today played very well. He was very dynamic he played like a Kaizer Chiefs attacking player, like the ones I know.
“Mdu also needs to learn that he is no longer a youngster, it’s probably his fourth season. He needs to show-up he is a senior player.
“If you checked in the game he made forward passes, defence-splitting passes, he attacked the space. It’s a pity he didn’t score. Well done to him I compliment him.”
The former Chiefs winger also had complimentary words for Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen who made several saves especially in the first half.
“To be honest this team [Stellenbosch] should have scored at least two goals or even one, there were two uprights and also the goalkeeper made saves,” added Khanye.
“Petersen made saves in the first half he did very well. There was a ball that was cleared off the line by [Wandile] Duba. That looked like it was going to be a goal.”
