Kaizer Chiefs appear to be closing in on a double swoop for Cape Town Spurs’ young talents, Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman, as negotiations gather pace behind the scenes.
According to a source, Chiefs are working to resolve the transfer saga by complying with FIFA regulations surrounding development compensation, but they’re also willing to go beyond what’s required.
FIFA compensation rules come into play
Insiders close to the matter explained that, under FIFA rules, a development compensation fee of R1.5 million per player applies. This means Amakhosi could owe R3 million in total if they receive the green light to register both players.
“You know, Chiefs are willing to follow the rules and do the right thing by the book. That’s why it’s believed that they are expected to pay R1.5 million for each player which means R3 million for the two players,” said the source.
The same source referenced a previous case involving Puso Dithejane’s switch to TS Galaxy, where development fees were also enforced.
Chiefs offer more than required to smooth deal
However, the story doesn’t end with regulation compliance. The Soweto giants reportedly plan to offer Cape Town Spurs a higher fee as a goodwill gesture, despite the club’s recent relegation from the Betway Premiership.
“It’s believed Chiefs are willing to pay more than the required amount by FIFA. As a sign of appreciation to Spurs. They are looking at paying around R5 million for both players,” the source revealed.
The source compared the situation to a previous transfer involving Siphesihle Ndlovu. For whom Chiefs also paid R5 million, even with his contract nearing its expiry at SuperSport United.
Velebayi and Baartman targeted since Spurs’ relegation
Chiefs began their pursuit of Velebayi following Spurs’ relegation and have now identified Baartman as a key target too. With both players highly rated, Amakhosi are keen to finalise the deal swiftly and reinforce their long-term strategy with youthful talent.
This potential R5 million investment signals not only a commitment to strengthening the squad. But also a willingness to maintain good relationships with domestic clubs.
