Lucas Ribeiro walks out of Sundowns: Qatari club close in

Lucas Ribeiro Costa has rocked Mamelodi Sundowns by abruptly exiting their pre-season camp in Rustenburg on Saturday, as transfer negotiations reach boiling point.

The Brazilian attacker, tipped as a leading contender for the Footballer of the Year award, requested to leave the camp just days after joining up with the squad, a move that strongly hints at an imminent transfer.

Masandawana are currently sharpening their preparations at Royal Marang ahead of the 2025/2026 season, which kicks off this Sunday evening with a blockbuster MTN8 quarter-final against Richards Bay FC at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

But all eyes have now turned to Ribeiro’s future after his unexpected departure.

Ribeiro’s impact: 25 goal contributions

Since arriving in June 2023, Ribeiro has proven indispensable to Sundowns. His electric form delivered 25 goal contributions in 51 appearances, playing a pivotal role in the club’s historic eighth straight league title triumph.

Following their FIFA Club World Cup journey, the Brazilian rejoined training on 21 July. And linked up with the squad at Chloorkop before heading to Rustenburg. But within days, he asked to leave, fuelling speculation about his next destination.

Qatari giants step ahead in transfer

While top clubs from France, Belgium, and Brazil, including Fluminense, have shown serious interest. Fresh reports from the Middle East have thrown a twist in the tale.

“Qatar Sports Club reportedly began negotiations in early July for the signature of Lucas Ribeiro,” claim sources close to the matter.

Latest developments suggest the Qatari outfit is on the brink of sealing a deal for the 26-year-old winger.

Sundowns quiet on exit

Sundowns have not officially confirmed Ribeiro’s departure. But their decision to allow him to leave the camp signals that the club may already be planning for life without him.

His availability for Sunday’s high-stakes encounter now hangs in the balance. With his sudden absence leaving supporters and analysts reading between the lines.

“Sundowns granted Ribeiro leave from the camp,” a source close to the club confirmed, further fuelling transfer speculation.

Where will Lucas Ribeiro land, Fluminense or Qatar SC?
