Mamelodi Sundowns have announced the signing of Bafana Bafana left-back Fawaaz Basadien from Stellenbosch FC ahead of the new season.
Basadien, 28, has enjoyed an incredible rise to prominence in South African football over the past three seasons since Stellenbosch lured him to the club from the now-defunct Moroka Swallows.
At the Dube Birds, he was converted from a winger to left-back and hasn’t looked back since, fast becoming one of the most sought-after players in the league and even went on to captain the national team in their recent 0-0 draw against Tanzania.
While he was linked with Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Sundowns over the past 12 months – Masandawana have managed to agree terms with Stellies who were reluctant to let the influential figure of the squad, before he signed an improved contract before the start of last season.
And despite the disappointment, he enjoyed another outstanding season with seven goals and eight assists in 46 games across all competitions as the Cape Winelands side finished third in the league, and reached the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup.
He will now join Masandawana before the start of the new season, after agreeing to a deal with the league champions who are chasing a ninth consecutive crown in the 2025/26 campaign.
