Banyana Banyana progressed to the semi-finals at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of nations (WAFCON) following a 4-1 win over Senegal in a penalty shootout after a  goalless draw in the quarter-finals on Saturday night.

The defending champions topped Group C with three points on their way to the knockout phase, while Senegal were third best finishers from Group A.

Banyana made one change from the side that defeated Mali 4-0 bringing in Sibulele Holweni ahead of Amogelang Motau in the starting line- up.

Banyana had chance to break the deadlock in the first half through Karabo Dhlamini after five minutes but nothing came out if it. Wolimata Ndiaye had a chance to put Senegal in the lead three minutes later but it was not meant to be.  The sides went into the break tied at 0-0.

Banyana captain Refiloe Jane had a chance to put her side ahead early in the second half but she shot over the bar.

Lebohang Ramalepe also had an opportunity with 10 minutes left in the regular clock however also missed the target.

There was a late scare from Senegal in injury time but the South African defense made sure it remained just that a threat leaving the game at 0-0 and into extra-time.

The first half of extra-time in the 97th minute Jermaine Seoposenwe found Ramalepe who found the back of the net but the goal was called off side. Hildah Magaia had a good chance to score in that half after a Seoposenwe pass but nothing came off it leaving the game to be decided via penalties.

Goalkeeper Andile Dlamini became the hero after saving two spot-kicks of Senegal, while Banyana netted all their four attempts to set up a semi-final with Nigeria.
