Former Bafana Bafana winger Percy Tau might have jeopardised his chances of returning to the PSL after revealing his salary expectations.
The 32-year-old winger has been without a club for much of this year and is still looking to revive his football career.
Speaking to Robert Marawa last year, Tau admitted that he would love to return to the PSL but insisted that he would not do so cheaply.
When asked whether he would accept a contract worth R450,000 per month on a two-year deal with an option to extend, Tau responded: “Perfect, yes.”
Percy Tau clubless after leaving Asia
After leaving Vietnam, Tau was linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs. The former Al Ahly star, however, revealed that Amakhosi had never approached him.
“If that situation were to happen, I would pay attention to it. But there are still other clubs in the PSL. I mean, I played for Sundowns, so I cannot write them off. It’s a team that I played for, I won and I’ve got so much love for the team and the fans.
“If Sundowns were not to offer me a contract and Chiefs does, then okay, it won’t be my fault but theirs that I’ve gone to join Chiefs. But I’ll listen to anybody. Let’s not rule out Orlando Pirates or even Stellenbosch.”
Percy Tau looking for an offer
Tau added that his decision would ultimately depend on which club offers him a contract.
“People might say that (that they won’t be able to afford him), but now that I’m here I can speak up for myself. I’m very reasonable, so whenever I speak about my contract dealings, I’m not going to ask what I know you are not going to offer me.”
A monthly salary of R450,000 would likely limit Tau’s options, with only a handful of PSL heavyweights potentially able to meet such demands.
However, even clubs like Pirates, Chiefs and Sundowns might be reluctant to commit that kind of money to a 32-year-old winger whose best years could be behind him.
Many supporters believe Percy Tau needs to lower his financial expectations significantly if he wants to secure a return to South African football and get his career back on track.
