Kaizer Chiefs have another exciting young academy prospect in their midst. Steven Mendes could soon train with the senior side after stellar displays for Amajita.
Khumalo backs Mendes for the Kaizer Chiefs seniors
18-year-old Steven Mendes won the Golden Boot at the recent COSAFA U20 tournament in Maputo, Mozambique. Mendes, nominally a midfielder, was converted into a striker for the event. He’s nicknamed ‘Stevie G’ by some teammates. DDC coach Vela Khumalo has cited his maturity and raw ability, traits which could soon see him earn promotion.
“With the Mendes story, everybody’s talking about that. These are the five players that were part of our DDC. He’s a special player, a top player. He’s going to make it big. The boy has grown in stature and is very talented.”
“It’s just a matter of time. He will also be knocking or being identified by the coaches to remain in the first team, in and out, train with the first team and all of that. But he’s a special player. He’s a talented player. This is good for our team.”
Latest injury update ahead of Kaizer Chiefs vs Stellenbosch
Kaizer Chiefs are dealing with a lengthy injury list, but several players are on the comeback trail soon. Striker Flavio Silva is back in training alongside Khanyisa Mayo, who has recovered after a hernia operation. 21-year-old winger Langelihle Phili is also nearing a return after a serious ankle injury he sustained in late August during training. Phili could return for the club’s home match against Stellenbosch on Tuesday 13 October, which kicks off at 19:30.
