Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns will face off in the MTN8 final this weekend in what promises to be another thrilling chapter in their growing rivalry.
The highly anticipated final will take place at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, 10 October. Tickets for the clash are sold out, with kick-off scheduled for 18:00.
Fans unable to attend the match will be able to watch it live on SABC 1 and the SuperSport channels.
What to expect between Pirates and Sundowns?
The two clubs have been closely matched in recent years, although their success has come in different competitions.
Sundowns have dominated the league, while Pirates have established themselves as a major force in cup competitions. That balance changed last season when the Buccaneers won the league title, ending their 14-year wait for the championship.
Sundowns, meanwhile, have won the MTN8 just once in the last 18 years. They now have an opportunity to add another trophy to their cabinet while denying Pirates another piece of silverware.
The Brazilians have also suffered heartbreak in their recent MTN8 meetings with the Buccaneers. In the last two finals between the sides, Pirates emerged victorious, leaving Sundowns to settle for runners-up medals.
Saturday’s showdown gives them another chance to change that narrative.
Sundowns will also take confidence from their most recent meeting with Pirates, having secured a 2-1 victory in the league.
However, previous results are unlikely to matter once the two sides step onto the field at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
With two of South Africa’s biggest clubs battling for the MTN8 trophy and the R10 million prize, the final promises to be another fiercely contested encounter.
One thing is certain: by the end of the night, either Pirates or Sundowns will have the bragging rights.
