PSL transfer window: Biggest winners and losers so far
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Reddit

Only a few weeks remain in the Premier Soccer League transfer window.

So far in the 2026/27 season, we have already seen twists, turns, and headline moves.

This week, Golden Arrows beat Kaizer Chiefs to the signature of Zimbabwean international Jonah Fabisch.

Which teams have gained or lost the most in the PSL transfer window?

Winner: Kaizer Chiefs

Under head coach Fernando da Cruz, the Naturena side has prioritised strategic deals.

Thabo Moloisane, as cited by the Kaizer Chiefs website, arrived from Stellenbosch FC earlier this year.

The 27-year-old defender made 64 appearances for Stellies.

For Kaizer Chiefs, their first signing of the transfer window was a signal of intent.

The team had been criticised for a lack of experience in the backline, with Moloisane expected to shore up the defence.

Chiefs backed up his signing by adding Khanyisa Mayo, a proven finisher.

The forward was on loan from CR Belouizdad in Algeria before the Amakhosi decided to make the move permanent.

Chiefs also signed Tanzanian midfielder Adolf Bitegeko and goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner to improve their squad depth.

Loser: Mamelodi Sundowns

On paper, the club appears to have lost more than it has gained.

Among the high-profile departures for Mamelodi Sundowns is Peter Shalulile, as reported by ESPN Africa.

The veteran striker fell out of favour under coach Miguel Cardoso, despite his contributions over six years.

Winger Thapelo Maseko also departed Sundowns in August to join Danish giants FC Copenhagen, while midfielder Miguel Reisinho also left to become a free agent.

The CAF Champions League title-holders have made five signings in this window.

These include Antonio van Wyk, Siyanda Ndlovu, Tsiki Ntsabaleng, and Cassius Mailula.

Perhaps the biggest signing for Sundowns is Deano van Rooyen, trading Orlando Pirates for Chloorkop.

While these players may have first-team impact, it could be argued that the club has downgraded in terms of reputation.

Cardoso has also spoken openly about team stability, believing things will improve once the transfer market closes on 22 September.

Winner: Orlando Pirates

The PSL champions have been the talk of this transfer window, making 10 signings.

Norwegian striker Sebastian Pedersen is among the biggest moves, alongside several experienced local players to add depth.

Among these names are Thapelo Mokobodi, Mthetheleli Mthiyane, Sbangani Zulu, and Neo Rapoo, scouted from other PSL clubs.

It is worth noting that Orlando Pirates’ transfer activity was mostly necessary due to injuries and some big-name departures.

The biggest loss for the Buccaneers was Relebohile Mofokeng joining Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in July.

As cited by Times Live, coach Abdeslam Ouaddou admitted that Pirates needed to fill the gap left by the forward’s departure.

“[Mofokeng] was an important player for the club. If you can just see his data, his involvement in chance creation was huge, but I believe it’s important to find a profile that can take the baton.”

Loser: Stellenbosch FC

With the loss of Moloisane to Chiefs and Mthiyane to Pirates, among others, the club may be the hardest hit by the transfer market.

Stellenbosch FC coach Gavin Hunt has even spoken on record about the intense window.

“I’ve never seen such player movement in the PSL with every club,” he reacted, as cited by BusinessDay.

He estimated that around 20 players had departed Stellies and believes club budgets are to blame.

Either way, losing several players to direct rivals is a major threat for the club.

With the club in 11th on the PSL table, transfer market losses will make things even more complicated for Stellenbosch.
