The news comes shortly after Maswanganyi was left out of the Orlando Pirates squad for their 1–0 victory over Sekhukhune United in the first leg of the MTN8 semi-final on Saturday.
The 28-year-old’s omission raised questions. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou confirmed that Maswanganyi was available but was not injured.
Asked why Maswanganyi was not involved, Ouaddou gave a cryptic response that immediately fuelled speculation. “I cannot say too much about the issue, he’s not injured,” the Orlando Pirates coach said.
“He was available but I cannot speak about something that I don’t masterise in.” Those comments have now taken on greater significance following a report from leading SABC Sport journalist Mazola Molefe.
Molefe reports that SABC Sport has established that Maswanganyi is closing in on a move to Bahrai. It is after being left out of the squad against Sekhukhune United.
The report states that Orlando Pirates have all but concluded talks with an unnamed club affiliated with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

According to the report, the move would bring an end to Maswanganyi’s three-year spell with Orlando Pirates.
The attacking midfielder has played an important role for the Buccaneers during his time at the club. He is set to leavs after helping them compete for major domestic honours.
The identity of the Bahrain club has not yet been revealed. However the latest report suggests that negotiations are at an advanced stage. It also explains why Ouaddou was unwilling to discuss the situation after Saturday’s match.
The initial speculation centred around a possible reunion with former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena at Pyramids FC in Egypt. However, the latest information points towards Bahrain instead.
For now, Patrick Maswanganyi appears increasingly likely to be playing his final days as an Orlando Pirates player. The next destination is expected to be confirmed once the deal is finalised.
