Relebohile Mofokeng announces himself with winning penalty as Union Saint-Gilloise lift Belgian Super Cup
Bafana Bafana star Relebohile Mofokeng enjoyed a dream start to life at Royal Union Saint-Gilloise, scoring the winning penalty as his side defeated fierce rivals Club Brugge to win the Belgian Super Cup on Friday evening.
Making his first official appearance for the club, the 21-year-old was introduced shortly after the hour mark with Union trailing 1-0.
Kevin Mac Allister equalised in the 77th minute to force the match into a penalty shoot-out after neither side could find a winner in regulation time.
With the pressure at its highest, Mofokeng stepped up to take Union’s fifth penalty. The South African international showed remarkable composure, confidently firing his spot-kick into the top corner to seal a 5-4 shoot-out victory and hand his new club the first trophy of the season.
Mofokeng a hero for new team
It was the perfect debut for the former Orlando Pirates star, who has already become a fan favourite following his move to Belgium. Mofokeng has quickly settled into his new surroundings and continues to impress both supporters and teammates.
The Belgian Super Cup is also the eighth trophy of Mofokeng’s career, an impressive achievement for a player still only 21 years old.
Union Saint-Gilloise now turn their attention to the UEFA Champions League qualifying playoffs on Tuesday, where Mofokeng is expected to play another important role as the Belgian champions chase a place in Europe’s premier club competition.
