Outspoken football analyst Junior Khanye has reflected on the bold prediction that changed his life and helped establish him as one of South Africa’s most recognisable football pundits.
The former Kaizer Chiefs winger, who represented Amakhosi between 2002 and 2005, famously predicted in 2020 that his old club would lose the Premiership title to Mamelodi Sundowns despite holding what looked like an unassailable lead.
At the time, Chiefs were 13 points clear of Sundowns with only a handful of matches remaining, and many believed the title race was already over.
The season, however, was suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic. When football resumed inside a bio-bubble, Amakhosi struggled to rediscover their earlier form and surrendered their advantage.
Sundowns eventually completed a remarkable comeback to win the league by two points.
Junior Khanye’s prediction, made during an interview with iDiski TV, was initially met with widespread ridicule.
Many fans dismissed his comments, with some even mocking the former winger, who had been out of professional football for nearly a decade at the time.
When his prediction came true, however, the clip went viral and catapulted Khanye into the spotlight.
“In 2020, the prediction changed my life. That prediction also changed iDiski TV forever. Nobody saw that coming here in South Africa. Thank God that He whispered to me,” Khanye said.
“By predicting, I was speaking my mind and I remember after that, people were swearing at me. I even got death threats, and people called me from private numbers, telling me they had seen me driving a Renault.”
