South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25.
Details surrounding Adams’ death have not yet been made public.
The tragic news was confirmed to local media by the player’s representatives and his guardian, while Mamelodi Sundowns requested that the family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.
Adams’ grandmother passed away during Bafana Bafana’s campaign at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
Family asks for privacy
Speaking on behalf of the Adams family, mentor Brendine Johnson described the devastating impact of the midfielder’s passing.
“At this moment, things are still raw. The family wouldn’t want to be contacted right now; they wouldn’t be able to answer anyone,” Johnson said.
“This passing has ripped everybody apart. Returning from the World Cup just now, and then getting such news… I had a close conversation with him on Thursday. The guy was really positive about returning after the World Cup and going forward.”
Johnson said Adams had been excited about the future following a successful season.
“Being a CAF champion, knowing what lies ahead, he was prepared. He doesn’t waste time away, being at home with his family.”
She added: “At this moment, I don’t even have words to say, but we ask that the family’s privacy be respected. Yes, I can tell you that he passed on. Nobody expected this.”
Jayden Adams rose to prominence at Stellenbosch FC, where his performances established him as one of South Africa’s brightest midfield talents.
His impressive displays earned him a move to Mamelodi Sundowns, where he continued his development and helped the club achieve domestic and continental success.
The midfielder also became an important member of Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad and represented South Africa at FIFA World Cup 2026, showcasing his ability on football’s biggest stage.
Adams appeared in all three of South Africa’s Group A matches.
He made nine appearances for Bafana Bafana in total, scoring one goal.
Widely admired for his energy, technical ability and composure in midfield, Adams was regarded as one of the country’s most promising players.
Tributes have poured in from across South African and African football as team-mates, clubs and supporters come to terms with the loss of a player whose career appeared destined for even greater heights.
Further details surrounding Adams’ death are expected to be released in due course.
The South African extends its condolences to the family, friends, team-mates and loved ones during this difficult time.
