R9.8 million deal report: Kaizer Chiefs complete second signing

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly made Khanyisa Mayo’s stay at Naturena permanent after reaching an agreement with CR Belouizdad worth around R9.8 million.

According to Algerian reports, Amakhosi have activated the agreement that followed the striker’s season-long loan spell, ensuring the 27-year-old remains at the club until at least June 2028.

“Kaizer Chiefs have secured the signing of Khanyisa Mayo permanently according to reports in Algeria,” iDiski Times’ Sinethemba Makonco reported. “According to information received, Amakhosi forked out a transfer fee close to double million Rand figures to secure Mayo on a permanent deal.”

The Mthatha-born winger/striker becomes the club’s second signing after Thabo Moloisane.

FRESH START UNDER NEW KAIZER CHIEFS COACH FERNANDO DA CRUZ

The move is a strong showing of faith from the Betway Premiership giants. Especially after Mayo endured a frustrating first season in gold and black. Injuries prevented Mayo from finding any real rhythm during the 2025/26 campaign.

The striker spent long spells on the sidelines. He struggled to cement a regular starting place, finishing the season with just two goals across all competitions.

Even when available, Mayo often found himself used out wide or overlooked by the previous technical team, leading to speculation that he could return to Algeria at the end of his loan.

However, the arrival of new head coach Fernando Da Cruz appears to have changed the picture.

With a fresh coaching team now in charge, Mayo has been handed another opportunity to prove why Kaizer Chiefs were so eager to bring him back to South African football.

CAN KHAYISA MAYO REDISCOVER HIS BEST FORM?

Before moving abroad, Mayo was one of the most consistent forwards in the Betway Premiership.

During three impressive seasons with Cape Town City, he scored 29 goals in 93 appearances to become the club’s all-time leading goalscorer. His performances also earned him Bafana Bafana recognition and eventually a reported R20 million move to CR Belouizdad in 2024.

Although he managed six goals and one assist in 41 matches in Algeria, his time there never quite lived up to expectations, eventually paving the way for his return to South Africa.

Now, with his future officially settled and Da Cruz beginning a new era at Kaizer Chiefs, Mayo has the perfect chance to put an injury-hit campaign behind him and finally show Amakhosi supporters why the club were prepared to invest in him permanently.
