Transfer report: Orlando Pirates offered R74 million for Appollis by Portuguese giants

Orlando Pirates could be facing a major transfer battle this summer after Portuguese giants FC Porto reportedly made a big-money move for Oswin Appollis.

According to Radar da Liga, the Portuguese club have submitted an offer worth around €4 million for the 24-year-old winger, with the report claiming Orlando Pirates have accepted the proposal and that the player could make the move to Portugal as early as this summer.

The reported offer represents a huge rise from the R16 million fee the Sea Robbers paid to sign Appollis from Polokwane City in July 2025, highlighting just how quickly his value has grown.

OSWIN APPOLLIS APPOLLIS TO LEAVE ORLANDO PIRATES?

The Cape Town Spurs academy product arrived at Orlando Pirates with plenty of expectations after his impressive performances at Polokwane City, but few could have predicted how quickly he would establish himself as one of the country’s most exciting talents.

The former SuperSport United attacker also saw Pirates rejecting an offer from MLS club Chicago Fire in 2025.

Under coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, the winger developed into a more complete player, adding defensive work rate and tactical discipline to his natural attacking ability. His pace, creativity and ability to beat defenders became one of Pirates’ biggest weapons during a successful campaign.

Appollis played a key role as Pirates secured a cup double by winning the MTN8 and Carling Knockout, while also helping the club claim the Betway Premiership title after a dramatic battle with Mamelodi Sundowns.

His form peaked at the end of the season, when he contributed five goals and two assists in his final ten club matches, producing the kind of performances that often attract attention from overseas clubs.

FROM BISHOP LAVIS TO THE WORLD CUP

His rise was not limited to club football. Appollis became one of Bafana Bafana’s most important attacking players under coach Hugo Broos, producing a 16 goal contributions through eight goals and eight assists.

The winger played a crucial role in South Africa’s qualification campaign, including the famous 3-0 victory over Rwanda that secured a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He also made his mark during the tournament, starting for Bafana Bafana against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca and showing the confidence that has made him one of the country’s most exciting attacking talents.

Although South Africa’s World Cup campaign ended with a heartbreaking knockout defeat to Canada, Appollis stood out against Czechia and in the later stages against Canada.

Now, with reported interest from FC Porto, the boy from Bishop Lavis could be on the verge of another major career step — from Pirates to one of Portugal’s biggest clubs.
