Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana star Relebohile Mofokeng has reportedly signed for Belgian champions Union Saint-Gilloise.
The 21-year-old playmaker enhanced his growing reputation with a string of impressive performances for Bafana Bafana at the FIFA World Cup, featuring in all three of the team’s matches.
Mofokeng was heavily linked with a move to German giants Bayer Leverkusen just last week, but it now appears Belgium could be his next destination.
Speaking on Soccerbeat, former South African footballer and Soccerbeat owner Peter du Toit claimed the highly-rated winger is on the verge of joining Union SG.
“This is what we’ve heard. The first point I want to make is that nothing has been confirmed, but I can tell you it’s highly likely that Rele Mofokeng has signed for top Belgian club Union SG,” Du Toit said.
Du Toit praised the Belgian outfit, highlighting their reputation for developing young talent.
“They are a proper football club and are owned by Tony Bloom, who also owns Brighton & Hove Albion. They are a club that develops players, signs them for good money, won the league a year or two ago and are always challenging for the title.”
Mofokeng linked with move to Belgium
According to Du Toit, multiple sources have indicated that Mofokeng has already completed the move.
“It’s well known that top clubs have been chasing Rele Mofokeng. One of our guys in Mexico was told by someone very close to Rele that the deal was either already done, although the club wasn’t mentioned.
“Then I got a call from a player in the Bafana squad who said, ‘Listen, Rele Mofokeng has signed for a club in Belgium, but I can’t remember which one.’ We did a little bit of homework and discovered the club is Union.”
Should the transfer be confirmed, Mofokeng would become the latest South African to play in Belgium. Former Bafana Bafana forward Percy Tau also enjoyed a spell with Union SG before earning a move to Brighton & Hove Albion.
