Hugo Broos extends record as most-capped Bafana Bafana coach

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos extended his record as the most-capped mentor of the national team in their 1-0 defeat to Canada in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Hugo Broos had confirmed that he intends to step down after the World Cup, but appeared to back-track on that statement following the final whistle.

He moved to 60 matches in charge, extending his record ahead of the former holder, Shakes Mashaba who oversaw 58 matches at the helm.

Broos has enjoyed a remarkable spell with the national team since taking over in May 2021.

In his 60 matches at the helm to date, Broos has guided South Africa to 27 wins, 23 draws and just 10 defeats, with Bafana Bafana scoring 83 goals and conceding 49.

That gives Broos a win-percentage of 45%.

Longest spell in charge

His tenure is already the longest in Bafana Bafana history, eclipsing the previous record held by the late Clive Barker.

Given South Africa’s history of frequent coaching changes, few would have predicted that a coach would remain in the position for five years.

Hugo Broos’ current spell with Bafana Bafana is also the second-longest managerial stint of his coaching career, behind the six seasons he spent in charge of Belgian giants Club Brugge between 1991 and 1997.

Group record

Bafana Bafana opened their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against co-hosts Mexico, losing 2-0 in Mexico City on 11 June.

They then held Czech Republic to a 1-1 draw a week later, and beat South Korea 1-0 in their final group assignment to qualify for the knockout stages as the runners-up in Group A.
