Late Eustáquio volley ends Bafana Bafana’s FIFA World Cup dream

Bafana Bafana came within seconds of forcing extra time before suffering a cruel 1-0 defeat to Canada in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Hugo Broos’ side spent long periods under relentless pressure but defended with courage and discipline, only for Stephen Eustáquio to produce a stunning stoppage-time volley that finally broke South African resistance and sealed Canada’s place in the last 16.

BAFANA BAFANA WITHSTAND EARLY CANADIAN PRESSURE

Canada started on the front foot, pressing aggressively from the opening whistle and pinning South Africa deep inside their own half. Despite the early pressure between the second and fourth minute, the Bafana defence stood firm and dealt comfortably with the danger.

South Africa produced the first effort on target in the fifth minute when Teboho Mokoena struck from distance, but goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau gathered comfortably.

Canada quickly resumed their high press and looked the more threatening side. Their first corner arrived in the 16th minute after another sustained spell of pressure.

The biggest chance of the opening half came five minutes later when Derek Cornelius found space inside the box, only to direct a soft header straight at Ronwen Williams.

Canada thought they had finally found the breakthrough two minutes before half-time when Moïse Bombito rose highest from another dangerous delivery, but Aubrey Modiba produced a brilliant goal-line clearance to keep the scores level.

HEROIC DEFENDING ENDS IN HEARTBREAK

Broos made a surprise change at the break, withdrawing Relebohile Mofokeng for Thalente Mbatha, seemingly adding more physical presence to midfield as Canada continued to dominate possession.

South Africa finally threatened in the 62nd minute when Oswin Appollis showed superb control to create space before firing a well-struck effort narrowly wide from 15 yards.

Canada responded almost immediately. Bombito tested Williams with a powerful effort before Mbekezeli Mbokazi produced another outstanding defensive intervention to prevent the loose ball from crossing the line.

The Canadians continued to launch wave after wave of attacks, forcing Williams into several excellent saves as Bafana defended desperately to stay alive.

Just when it looked as though South Africa had earned extra time, heartbreak arrived in the 91st minute. Stephen Eustáquio met a loose ball outside the penalty area and unleashed a superb first-time volley beyond the helpless Williams.

It was a devastating finish for Bafana after an immense defensive effort, while Canada celebrated a dramatic victory that secured their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
