Hugo Broos extends stay as Bafana Bafana coach

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos extended his stay as coach of the national team by at least one more match after guiding his side to a 1-0 win over South Korea in their final Group A match in Monterrey on Wednesday.

In doing so, the 74-year-old Belgian mentor became the most-capped coach in South Africa’s history

Stepping down after FIFA World Cup 2026

Hugo Broos has already confirmed that he intends to step down after the World Cup.

He moved to 59 matches in charge, surpassing the now old ‘record’ of 58 matches of Shakes Mashaba.

Broos has enjoyed a remarkable spell with the national team since taking over in May 2021.

In his 59 matches at the helm to date, Broos has guided South Africa to 27 wins, 23 draws and just nine defeats, with Bafana Bafana scoring 83 goals and conceding 48.

That gives Broos a win-percentage of 45.8%.

Longest spell in charge

His tenure is already the longest in Bafana Bafana history, eclipsing the previous record held by the late Clive Barker.

Given South Africa’s history of frequent coaching changes, few would have predicted that a coach would remain in the position for five years.

Hugo Broos’ current spell with Bafana Bafana is also the second-longest managerial stint of his coaching career, behind the six seasons he spent in charge of Belgian giants Club Brugge between 1991 and 1997.

Loss and a draw

Bafana Bafana opened their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against co-hosts Mexico, losing 2-0 in Mexico City on 11 June.

They then held Czech Republic to a 1-1 draw a week later.

Hugo Broos will now have the chance to extend his record and cap off his Bafana Bafana career when South Africa take on co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32.

That match will take place on Sunday, 28 June at 21:00 (SA time) at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California.
