FIFA World Cup spotlight sends Relebohile Mofokeng’s stock soaring

Orlando Pirates sensation Relebohile Mofokeng is now even more valuable than ever after his FIFA World Cup selection.

Still only 21, Mofokeng’s value has risen – and will no doubt continue to rise – after being selected to play for Bafana Bafana at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

In fact, his market value had already skyrocketed before he had even kicked a ball in the tournament being co-hosted by the United Stated, Mexico and Canada.

Let’s break it all down.

MOFOKENG VALUE SOARS UP AFTER FIFA WORLD CUP SELECTION

Mofokeng value drastically increased due to being selected in Hugo Broos final 26-man Bafana Bafana squad for the FIFA World Cup.

“According to various sources with intel on transfer values, Mofokeng’s value has earned a 20% rise for his mere selection in the squad,” KickOff reported.

The Orlando Pirates sensation had a transfer value of $2.5 million (R41 million) prior to his selection in the Bafana Bafana World Cup squad.

Thereafter, it soared to $3 million (roughly R50 million) after he was selected.

Mofokeng was surprisingly an unused substitute in the opener against Mexico – a match South Africa lost 2-0

Thereafter, he came on early in the second half against Czech Republic to ignite some much-needed energy, spark and creativity.

Bafana Bafana went from bland to bright and bold and Mofokeng certainly helped inspire this.

He brought dynamism to South Africa’s and kept the Czech Republic defenders guessing.

He’s likely to become even more valuable if he plays in Bafana Bafana’s decisive final Pool A encounter against South Korea on Thursday, 25 June at 03:00 (SA time).

Even more so if South Africa reach the Round of 32.

ORLANDO PIRATES STARS WAVING THE SA FLAG

Nkosinathi Sibisi, Oswin Appollis, Relebohile Mofokeng, Evidence Makgopa, Thalente Mbatha and Kamogele Sebelebe have all represented Orlando Pirates at the FIFA World Cup.

Sibisi started against Mexico before being dropped against Czech Republic with Broos opting for a more balanced and attacking formation.

Appollis came off the bench against Mexico before starting the match against Czech Republic.

As mentioned, Mofokeng was an unused substitute against Mexico. His FIFA World Cup journey started early in the second half against Czech Republic.

Makgopa came off the bench in both matches.

Meanwhile, Mbatha came off the bench against Mexico then started against Czech Republic as he stepped in for the suspended Sphephelo Sithole.

Finally, Sebelebele made a short cameo off the bench when he came on for Thapelo Maseko in the 84th minute against the Czechs.

So, six Orlando Pirates stars have played for Bafana Bafana at the FIFA World Cup so far.

That means that only Sipho Chaine and Tshepang Moremi have not represented the Bucs – on the pitch – so far.

Given the fact that Ronwen Williams is captain, Chaine is unlikely to feature.

Meanwhile, we will have to wait to see if Broos opts to utilise Moremi in any capacity in the match against South Korea.

SHOULD Relebohile Mofokeng LEAVE ORLANDO PIRATES AFTER THE WORLD CUP OR STAY AT THE BUCS?
