Representing a nation of just over 525,000 people, Cabo Verde have refused to be overawed by some of world football’s biggest names. They will head into their final group match knowing qualification for the Round of 32 is within touching distance.
The Blue Shark’s remarkable journey began with a shock 0-0 draw against European champions Spain, a result many initially dismissed as a one-off.

The two draws leave Cabo Verde on two points after two matches, level with Uruguay in Group H.
Spain lead the standings on four points following their emphatic 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia, while the Saudis sit bottom with one point.
With the expanded 48-team allowing the eight best third-placed teams to qualify alongside the top two in each group, Cabo Verde remain in an excellent position to reach the knockout stage.
Their final obstacle is Saudi Arabia, whom they face at Houston Stadium on Saturday 27 June at 02:00.
Victory would almost certainly send the Blue Sharks into the Round of 32 and complete one of the most remarkable underdog stories of the tournament.
Under coach Pedro Leitao Brito, Cabo Verde have shown that organisation, discipline and belief can bridge any gap in resources or reputation. One more win could secure a place in FIFA World Cup history.
