Kaizer Chiefs have not officially named their new head coach. But former co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef may have let the cat out of the bag.
In an interview in the iDiski Times digital newspaper with Lorenz Kohler, he repeatedly referred to Fernando Da Cruz as the man set to lead the club next season.
KHALIL BEN YOUSSEF BACKS FERNANDO DA CRUZ AMID EXPECTED KAIZER CHIEFS ANNNOUNCEMENT
Ben Youssef was asked about the current squad he worked with. And how far Amakhosi remain behind rivals Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns heading into next season.
The question specifically referenced “the next coach, presumably Fernando Da Cruz.” Responding to the question, Ben Youssef suggested expectations should be measured if Da Cruz is appointed.
“It will be tough. Next season, if they stay in the top four, not top three. I think it would be a good performance for coach Fernando da Cruz. And I know he’s one of the best coaches in Africa.
“In CAF, if they reach the quarter-final, it will be a big result. But that’s being realistic…”
His comments are likely to fuel further speculation that Da Cruz is indeed the man chosen to lead Kaizer Chiefs. However, the club has not yet confirmed the appointment.
AMAKHOSI PROJECT COULD CONTINUE
Ben Youssef was also asked whether Da Cruz’s arrival would represent a continuation of the football project that Kaizer Chiefs pursued last season.
While acknowledging that Da Cruz has previously favoured a 4-3-3 system rather than the 4-2-3-1 used by Kaizer Chiefs, he praised the Frenchman’s willingness to adapt and embrace modern tactical ideas.
“But the only thing I know, he’s one of the people that is always following the new game models, the trends in football.
“He watches a lot of football, he’s always updated and always knows what’s going on. He has many ideas, and I appreciate him,: the Tunisian concluded.
Meanwhile, Ben Youssef is said to be completing a move to Durban City FC.
