FIFA World Cup 2026 continues on Tuesday, 16 June with two of the tournament favourites, France and Argentina, finally entering the fray as Group I and Group J begin their campaigns.

With several groups already underway, attention now turns to a packed day of action featuring eight nations hoping to make an early statement in their quest for World Cup glory.

Standout fixture

Former champions France kick off their tournament against Senegal in what promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the opening round.

Boasting a squad packed with world-class talent, the French will be eager to start with three points, but Senegal’s pace, athleticism and tournament experience make them dangerous opponents.

FRANCE VS SENEGAL: TUESDAY, 16 JUNE – 21:00 (SA TIME)

Later in Group I, Norway take on Iraq in a match carrying significant importance for both nations.

Norway, led by prolific striker Erling Haaland, will be looking to justify their status as favourites, while Iraq will be aiming to produce an upset and boost their chances of reaching the knockout stages.

NORWAY VS IRAQ: WEDNESDAY, 17 JUNE – 00:00 (SA TIME)

The spotlight will then shift to Group J, where defending champions Argentina begin the defence of their World Cup crown against Algeria.

Led by captain Lionel Messi, Argentina arrive in North America carrying the weight of expectation after lifting the trophy four years ago.

Algeria, however, will be determined to frustrate the holders and make life difficult in their opening encounter.

ARGENTINA VS ALGERIA: WEDNESDAY, 17 JUNE – 03:00 (SA TIME)

The day’s action concludes with Austria taking on Jordan, with both nations targeting a positive start in a group where every point could prove crucial.

With the group stage beginning to take shape, Tuesday’s fixtures could provide an early indication of which teams are genuine contenders and which may face an uphill battle to progress.

As the world’s biggest football tournament gathers momentum, fans can expect drama, excitement and plenty of storylines as another chapter of the FIFA World Cup unfolds.
