OPEN LETTER to Hugo Broos: Mofokeng needs to start to save Bafana’s FIFA World Cup
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

It’s clear that Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos got his tactics horribly wrong against Mexico in their FIFA World Cup 2026 opener.

Now, several big decisions await ahead of the next all-important Group A clash against Czech Republic.

Place your bets with Sportingbet South Africa

South Africa suffered a 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico. As a result, there is virtually no margin for error going forward.

The means the challenge facing Broos is simple: He must get his selection right. He must get his tactics right. Most importantly, his players must raise their levels dramatically.

These FOUR changes will give Bafana Bafana the best chance of keeping their FIFA World Cup hopes alive.

DEAR BROOS, PLEASE START MOFOKENG – AND MAKE THESE OTHER CHANGES

Dear Hugo Broos

We have to save our FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign and these are the changes that will give us the best chance of doing so.

You are among the most experienced coaches in South African football history. Under your leadership, Bafana Bafana qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 24 years.

Along the way, there were memorable victories over Morocco away from home and Egypt on their own soil. Those results highlighted the character of this team and your qualities as a tactician.

However, the defeat to Mexico exposed several concerns.

We were lacklustre on attack. We struggled to create meaningful chances and rarely looked capable of troubling the opposition defence.

A handful of long-range efforts were not enough at this level. World Cups are often decided by moments of quality, and Bafana Bafana simply did not produce enough of them.

That is why Relebohile Mofokeng has to start.

The Orlando Pirates star is arguably the most exciting talent in the PSL today.

Having recently collected his fourth PSL Player of the Month award, he arrives with confidence, momentum and the ability to change matches in an instant.

His creativity, close control and fearlessness could provide the attacking edge South Africa lacked against Mexico.

At a tournament where opportunities are scarce, players capable of producing something unexpected become invaluable.

Additionally, I would like to see Oswin Appollis, Thalente Mbatha and Evidence Makgopa start please.

We need pace outside to threaten on attack. So, equally important is the inclusion of Oswin Appollis.

South Africa lacked pace and directness in wide areas against Mexico. Appollis offers both.

His willingness to run at defenders could stretch opposing backlines and create space for others to exploit.

We need results and that means we need goals. So pace out wide, creativity and quality finishers all need to enter the fray.

Meanwhile, in the midfield, ‘Yaya’ Sithole had a shocker, receiving a red card after regularly losing the ball in the midfield.

Therefore, Orlando Pirates midfielder Mbatha needs to start.

As the fourth midfielder in the squad he will almost certainly step in for Sithole. Mbatha could offer the composure, discipline and balance required in such a high-pressure encounter.

With every possession now carrying greater significance, control in midfield becomes non-negotiable.

Finally, up front, Lyle Foster was dispossessed frequently against Mexico and he failed to create chances and get into attacking spaces.

This is where the likes of Evidence Makgopa could make a big difference.

The lanky striker will win back a lot of ball for Mofokeng and Appollis to attack with. Likewise, they can provide him with chances to finish too.

Hugo, please consider these four changes as we need goals and simply have to win to save our campaign.

BAFANA BAFANA HAVE TO BOUNCE BACK STRONGLY

Losing the opening match of a World Cup places immediate pressure on any team.

History shows that nations who start with a defeat often face an uphill battle to reach the knockout stages. That reality now confronts South Africa.

Therefore, the equation is straightforward. Bafana Bafana simply must find a way to win at least one of their remaining matches against the Czech Republic and South Korea.

However, there is still reason for optimism.

The expanded tournament format means eight of 12 third-placed teams will also advance to the next round.

Nevertheless, relying on other results is rarely the preferred route. The objective should be to take control of their own destiny.

A victory, coupled with at least a draw from the remaining fixtures, would give South Africa a genuine chance of progressing.

More importantly, it would demonstrate the resilience that has become a hallmark of Broos’ tenure.

The coming days could define this generation of Bafana Bafana players.

Now is the time for bold decisions, brave selections and a response worthy of the world’s biggest stage.
