Bafana Bafana chasing R182 million jackpot at World Cup

Bafana Bafana have the opportunity to significantly increase their earnings at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with a place in the knockout stages worth an additional R182 million in prize money.

South Africa have already secured approximately R150 million simply for qualifying and participating in the expanded 48-team tournament.

That figure however could rise substantially if Hugo Broos’ men progress beyond the group stage.

A place in the Round of 32 would reportedly earn Bafana a further R182 million, while reaching the Last 16 could see their total prize money climb to around R250 million.

Bafana eye nearly R200 million?

While South Africa have never advanced beyond the group stage at a FIFA World Cup, there is growing belief that this squad can make history in Mexico.

Bafana have been drawn in Group A alongside Mexico, the Czech Republic and South Korea. On paper, it is a challenging but balanced group, with no traditional global powerhouse standing in their way.

How much can Bafana Bafana earn?

Having already guaranteed themselves R150 million for participating in the tournament, Bafana could boost their earnings significantly with a successful group-stage campaign.

Advancing to the Round of 32 would bring an additional R182 million, while qualification for the Last 16 could increase the total reward to around R250 million.

A win and a draw from their three group matches could be enough to secure progression, while even two wins would almost certainly guarantee a place in the knockout rounds.

All eyes will be on South Africa when they open their World Cup campaign against Mexico. The host nation heads into the tournament in strong form, having won six of their last eight matches and boasting an impressive record on home soil.

Bafana have prepared for the tournament with friendly matches against Panama, Nicaragua and Jamaica, giving Broos an opportunity to fine-tune his squad ahead of the biggest challenge in South African football.

Bafana have the opportunity to earn close to R200 million from a win and a draw in the group stages.

A run to the knockout stages would not only represent a historic achievement on the pitch but also provide a major financial boost for both Bafana Bafana and the South African Football Association (SAFA).

How far can Bafana go?
