Orlando Pirates finally let go of expensive flop
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Orlando Pirates will officially cut the cord with Angolan winger Gilberto.

Expensive signing Gilberto to leave Orlando Pirates

According to iDiski Times, Orlando Pirates have officially released Angolan winger Gilberto. He arrived at the club in July 2024 and has been loaned back to his former club, Petro de Luanda, after failing to notch a single goal or assist in 12 Bucs appearances.

“Pirates have officially parted ways with Gilberto after the end of his loan with Petro de Luanda.

“The Angola national team winger joined Pirates with much optimism back in 2024 and impressed during their pre-season in Spain but failed to establish himself in the first XI under then-head coach Jose Riveiro.

“He was subsequently loaned back to the Girabola giants, where he was part of the league-winning squad this past season. However, sources have now confirmed the player and Pirates have officially parted ways with the winger, one season before his contract was due to expire.

Eight players to represent Orlando Pirates at the World Cup

Hugo Broos has announced his 26-man squad to tackle the finest the planet has to offer at the 2026 World Cup. Eight Orlando Pirates players will board the plane, which isn’t a massive shock. They are Sipho Chaine, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Kamogelo Sebelebele, Thalente Mbatha, Oswin Appollis, Tshepang Moremi, Relebohile Mofokeng and Evidence Makgopa. Mofokeng got by far the loudest cheer from his peers when Hugo Broos announced the 21-year-old’s name during Wednesday’s ceremony. The newly crowned champions of South Africa are also eyeing out another teenage defender.
