Scouting for Kaizer Chiefs: Left-backs to sign – Part 1
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Reddit

Kaizer Chiefs may have seen encouraging signs from Bradley Cross last season, but questions remain about the depth and long-term future of the position.

Amakhosi entered the campaign with three recognised left-backs, yet only Cross truly cemented his place in the side after making 28 appearances. Nkanyiso Shinga struggled to break into the starting XI before suffering an injury in his first appearance of the season as late as March, while Paseka Mako battled two separate injuries and managed 18 appearances.

Based on the numbers, Siwelele’s Rapoo is currently the most productive attacking left-back in South African football.

EXPECT A NEW LEFT-BACK AT KAIZER CHIEFS

The appeal of recruiting locally is obvious. Players already established in the Betway Premiership football understand the demands of the league and often require little adaptation time. Rapoo fits that profile perfectly.

The 20-year-old has been linked with Kaizer Chiefs for the last two seasons, even before the club eventually opted to bring in Paseka Mako.

There is also an existing relationship between Amakhosi and Siwelele FC. Christian Saile joined the Free State club in a swap deal involving Tashreeq Morris, while Samkelo Zwane and Happy Mashiane spent time there on loan. Tebogo Potsane also made the move from Naturena to Siwelele.

Rapoo has emerged as one of the most exciting young full-backs in South African football. Born in Tsitsing near Rustenburg, he was identified at the age of 11 and developed through the SuperSport United academy before making his senior debut under Gavin Hunt at just 17 years old.

His move to Siwelele FC ahead of the 2025/26 season accelerated his development. Rapoo became a regular starter, featuring in 26 league matches and establishing himself as one of the most productive attacking full-backs in the Betway Premiership.

CROSSING QUALITY AND INTERNATIONAL PEDIGREE

The numbers immediately catch the eye. Rapoo finished the season as the league’s leading crosser with 150 deliveries into the box, ahead of AmaZulu’s Riaan Hanamub on 145 and Mamelodi Sundowns’ Aubrey Modiba on 127. He also managed 14 shots on goal across his 26 appearances.

Rapoo’s numbers are not only impressive going forward. The 20-year-old recorded 140 defensive contributions across tackles, interceptions and clearances during the campaign, outperforming both Hanamub and Modiba in total defensive actions. While part of that is due to Siwelele FC spending more time defending than possession-dominant sides such as Mamelodi Sundowns, it also highlights Rapoo’s work rate and defensive involvement.

The youngster also won 55% of his aerial duels and 56.1% of his ground duels, showing he can compete physically despite his age. His aggressive style has resulted in seven yellow cards this season, considerably more than Modiba’s four and Hanamub’s one, but it also reflects a defender willing to engage in battles across the flank rather than simply contain opponents.

While Modiba benefits from operating in a Sundowns side that kept 18 clean sheets across all competitions, Rapoo has often had to defend under greater pressure, facing more shots on goal than his counterparts. That context makes his defensive output even more impressive.

Internationally, Rapoo’s reputation continues to grow. He captained South Africa’s U-20 side to a historic Africa Cup of Nations title, scoring during the tournament and helping Amajita qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, where they reached the Round of 16 in Chile.

SHOULD KAIZER CHIEFS MAKE THE MOVE?
