Mamelodi Sundowns have moved swiftly to secure the future of club captain Themba Zwane after agreeing to a new one-year contract extension with the veteran midfielder.
The deal will keep the influential playmaker at Chloorkop until at least the end of the 2026/27 season, bringing an end to months of speculation surrounding his future at the Tshwane giants.
Mamelodi Sundowns officially confirmed Zwane’s extension on Friday ahead of their friendly clash against German side RB Leipzig at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Big boost for Masandawana
The renewal comes as a major boost for Miguel Cardoso’s side, who continue preparations for another demanding season on both the domestic and continental fronts.
Despite injury setbacks affecting parts of his previous campaign, Zwane remains one of the most important figures in the Mamelodi Sundowns set-up, both as a leader on the pitch and a senior voice in the dressing room.
Earlier this year, reports indicated the club still viewed the 36-year-old as a key figure and were keen to retain his services because of his leadership qualities, experience and influence.
Mamelodi Sundowns have now acted to ensure one of their greatest-ever players remains part of the project.
Zwane was one of eight Mamelodi Sundowns players named in Bafana Bafana’s 26-man FIFA World Cup 2026 squad this week.
Club legend stays at Chloorkop
Affectionately known as “Mshishi”, Zwane has spent most of his professional career at Mamelodi Sundowns and has cemented his place among the club’s all-time greats.
The attacking midfielder has played a pivotal role in the Brazilians’ dominance over the last decade, helping the club win multiple league titles, domestic cups and two CAF Champions League trophies.
Known for his technical brilliance, creativity and composure under pressure, Zwane has been central to Sundowns’ sustained success in South African football.
Focus shifts to new season
His contract extension comes as Mamelodi Sundowns continue reshaping and strengthening their squad ahead of another busy campaign.
The Tshwane giants are expected to remain active in the transfer market as they target continued success in the Betway Premiership and continental competition.
For Mamelodi Sundowns supporters, however, the biggest piece of business may already be done – ensuring their long-serving captain remains at the club for at least another season.
