Mamelodi Sundowns captain Ronwen Williams believes Bafana Bafana will head into the FIFA World Cup in high spirits following Orlando Pirates’ Betway Premiership triumph.
Williams spoke after Sundowns were crowned CAF Champions League winners, defeating AS FAR 2-1 on aggregate in the final.
After securing a 1-0 victory in the first leg at home, Masandawana produced a composed performance away from home to earn a 1-1 draw and lift their second CAF Champions League title.
With the core of the Bafana Bafana squad made up of players from both Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, Williams said the success enjoyed by both clubs could provide a major boost for the national team ahead of the World Cup.
“It’s amazing, I think the whole of South Africa is happy now,” said the Bafana Bafana captain.
“Obviously they won the league, we won the Champions League, and I said a few months ago maybe the season would pan out like this so we can go into the World Cup in a happy mood.”
Williams happy with Pirates league truimph
“Most of the squad is made up of our players and theirs, so hopefully when we go into camp we can take that energy, positivity and success with us, and it can rub off on the entire team because we need it as a country.”
“It’s only a good thing for South African football,” the Downs keeper added.
Williams faced Pirates four times this season, winning once while the other three encounters ended in draws.
Bafana Bafana open their FIFA World Cup campaign against Mexico on 11 June.
