Orlando Pirates had to dig deep to secure their first league title in 14 years.
The Buccaneers were crowned Betway Premiership champions following a 2-0 victory over Orbit College on Saturday in Mbombela.
Heading into the clash, Pirates knew that victory would guarantee them the title, and their task was made easier after Orbit conceded two own goals.
Just a month ago, it looked as though the championship was slipping away, but Mamelodi Sundowns’ poor run of form opened the door for the Buccaneers to fight their way back into contention.
Here are some of the key matches that helped Orlando Pirates lift the league trophy:
Late win over Polokwane City
Just when it seemed the Buccaneers were about to drop crucial points, Patrick Maswanganyi struck a late winner to keep the club’s title hopes alive.
A draw at that stage of the season could have dealt a major psychological blow with more than five matches still to play.
Draw against Kaizer Chiefs
The Soweto Derby was viewed as a potential title decider and, after Chiefs took the lead in the second half, it appeared Pirates’ title ambitions were fading.
However, an equaliser from Kabohelo Sebelebele proved vital. At the time, it looked like simple damage control, but a few hours later Sundowns were held to a goalless draw by Richards Bay, giving the Buccaneers a huge lifeline in the race.
Pirates fought back to win the league
Crucial victory over Magesi FC
With only two rounds remaining, Pirates and Sundowns were level on points.
Masandawana went all out to improve their goal difference and, despite scoring seven goals, they only gained a three-goal advantage after conceding four.
Pirates responded with a convincing 3-0 win over Magesi, a result that effectively placed one hand on the trophy.
A few days later, Sundowns suffered a defeat to TS Galaxy, a result that all but handed Orlando Pirates the league title.
