Bafana Bafana’s strongest starting XI against Mexico at the World Cup

Bafana Bafana will begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Mexico national football team at the iconic Estadio Azteca on 11 June.

The last time Bafana appeared at the World Cup was in 2010 on home soil. Despite enjoying home-ground advantage, South Africa failed to progress beyond the group stage.

Sixteen years later, Bafana return to football’s biggest stage determined to rewrite history.

Drawn in Group A alongside hosts Mexico, the Czech Republic and South Korea, Hugo Broos’ men will believe they have a realistic chance of reaching the knockout rounds for the first time.

A win and a draw could be enough to secure qualification from the group but even one win might be enough if they finish as one of the best third-place finishers.

Bafana Bafana’s strongest starting XI against Mexico:

Ronwen Williams (Goalkeeper)

Despite an inconsistent season in which he conceded a few avoidable goals, Williams remains the best goalkeeper in South Africa. His leadership and experience in major tournaments will be crucial for Bafana.

If the captain rediscovers his best form, South Africa could stand a real chance of frustrating Mexico.

Khuliso Mudau (Right-back)

Mudau has developed into one of the best full-backs on the continent. Against Mexico, he is expected to face dangerous attackers such as Alexis Vega and Julián Quiñones. Should Sailor produce one of his top performances, Bafana’s right side could be well protected.

Keanu Cupido (Centre-back)

Although Cupido has only made a handful of appearances for Bafana, he could prove to be the ideal defensive partner for Mbekezeli Mbokazi.

The defender has been commanding and composed for Mamelodi Sundowns this season, showing strength in aerial duels and calmness under pressure.

Mbekezeli Mbokazi (Centre-back)

Mbokazi has enjoyed a sensational rise and is expected to play a key role at the tournament.

Known for his aggressive and no-nonsense defending, the youngster could become one of South Africa’s standout performers at the World Cup. Against Mexico, TLB will hold Bafana’s fate against the Azteca crowd.

Aubrey Modiba (Left-back)

Modiba offers pace, attacking support and defensive discipline. Against a technically gifted Mexican side, he may need to focus more on protecting the backline while choosing the right moments to push forward.

Teboho Mokoena (Central Midfielder)

Mokoena remains one of Bafana’s most important players. The midfielder’s ability to shield the defence, dictate the tempo and break up opposition attacks will be vital against Mexico.

The Mamelodi Sundowns star is known for his commitment and leadership, qualities South Africa will need on the big stage.

Thalente Mbatha (Central Midfielder)

Mbatha’s work rate and physical presence make him a valuable option in midfield. His height could prove useful when defending set-pieces against Mexico, while his powerful long-range shooting offers an additional attacking threat.

He may edge ahead of Sphephelo Sithole in the starting line-up. Yaya has not done much since recovering from injury.

Will Bafana be more defensive against Mexico?

Relebohile Mofokeng (Attacking midfielder)

Mofokeng’s pace and creativity could make him a better option than Themba Zwane in a high-tempo encounter.

While he may not offer the same defensive contribution as Zwane, the youngster’s movement, flair and vision could trouble the Mexican defence.

Oswin Appollis (Right winger)

Appollis has been one of the standout performers in the league and appears certain to start. The winger scored twice at the previous AFCON tournament and will be eager to add to his international tally.

His defensive work rate could also become important if Bafana spend long periods without possession.

Tshepang Moremi ( Left winger)

Moremi’s speed and direct approach could cause problems down the flank. Although he may not yet possess the finishing ability of Mofokeng or Appollis, he brings energy, wins fouls and tracks back effectively.

Lyle Foster (FW)

Foster’s experience in the Premier League could prove invaluable at the World Cup. The striker scored twice at AFCON and has shown he can compete against high-level defenders.

If Bafana are to upset Mexico, Foster may need to produce a moment of brilliance or deliver a decisive finish in front of goal.

Can Bafana win their opener?
